Say My Name

What’s in a name? Bassoon duo Tuple defy their moniker, which signifies a strict sequence in mathematics. Throwing structure to the wind, members Rachael Elliott and Lynn Hileman instead “share ideas and influences freely, swapping parts and behaving more as free radicals than ordered elements,” they write on one concert’s program notes. Music lovers witness that kind of reckless abandon at a free UVM concert this week, where the bassoonists travel through a repertoire leaping from absurdist and minimalist styles to funk-inspired American and electronic tones. Formed in 2006, the pair emphasizes the work of living composers. This week’s program, “Crossroads: From Contemplation to Groove,” includes pieces by Dutch composer Louis Andriessen, Russian modernist Sofia Gubaidulina and American postmodernist Michael Daugherty.
