'Taking Flight'

If you weren't a bird lover before stepping into the Jackson Gallery at Middlebury's Town Hall Theater this month, you may well be one afterward. Adelaide Tyrol's creatures, painted with sumi ink on paper, sweep their powerful wings against otherworldly skies. Carol MacDonald's monoprints feature gnarly beaked crows and bald eagles guarding nests that appear to be made of wispy flames. Susan Raber Bray incorporates dark, roosting birds into her Etruscan-inspired ceramics. With the carved wooden decoys of Gary Starr, woodblock prints by Ray Hudson and paintings by Liza Myers, the show really does take flight. Through June 19. Pictured: "Flight" by Adelaide Tyrol.
