Seven Days: Vermont's Independent Voice

A love of film noir and iconic European directors informed the photographer’s early visual aesthetic. But as Merrick grew older and moved from Louisville, Ky., where he attended the Center for Photographic Studies, to San Francisco and finally to Vermont, he absorbed new surroundings and let these come through in his images. “While I view these images as serious poetic moments,” Merrick states, “I also believe in viewing them with a sense of humor.” After three decades as a commercial photographer, he lets loose with more personal visions in a show, titled “A Certain Ambiguity,” at the Jackson Gallery in Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater.
