03.19.09 The Slam for Sudan, in which Vermont high-school students compete in slam-dunk and three-pointer contests. The proceeds benefit Sudanese refugees living in Vermont. 01.08.09 Women in Afghanistan, a talk tonight by Middlebury College sophomore Shabana Basij-Rasikh, who describes attending secret schools for girls under Taliban rule. 10.09.08 The talk by PostSecret founder Frank Warren . Warren explains his popular public art project, in which he solicits secrets from strangers. He'll also show images of submissions that were banned from his four PostSecret books. Says Cathy: "Who can resist a good secret?" 09.04.08 Listening to 'A Prairie Home Companion' on VPR — this weekend's episode was recorded last month at the Champlain Valley Fair. Says Cathy: "I love me some Bebop-a-Rebop Rhubarb Pie!" 06.26.08 Political BBQ and Hamburger Summit, an annual gathering of local politicians, activists, reporters and bloggers. "It's a great opportunity to grill Gaye Symington and other candidates," says Cathy. "And who knows, maybe they'll be up for a game of touch football." 05.15.08 The Blackfly Festival, an annual, tongue-in-cheek celebration of Vermont's most annoying insect. "They've got a pie contest, kids activities and a parade," says Cathy. "It's some good fun. 04.10.08 Rachel Frida Siegel and Joy Madden, whose dance performances explore motherhood. "Rachel is my friend," says Cathy. 10.18.07 Garry Trudeau. The "Doonesbury" cartoonist is speaking at a fundraiser for the Center for Cartoon Studies. "Trudeau's been doing 'Doonesbury' for 36 years, and it's still smart, funny and indispensable," says Cathy. "He's worth the drive to White River Junction." 10.11.07 Birds of Vermont Fall Festival. "The Birds of Vermont museum is a little weird, because all the birds are carved from wood, but they've got actual live raptors at this festival on Saturday," says Cathy. "Plus admission is free." 08.09.07 VINS Nature Center. "I've heard great things about the raptor center," says Cathy. "And I'm intrigued by birds of prey." Open daily, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. $8 adults, $6.50 kids.

07.17.07 Muggle Madness Party at the Flying Pig in Shelburne, to celebrate the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows. "I just re-read books five and six in the Harry Potter series," says Cathy. "I'm planning to get book seven and pull an all-nighter."
