A decade is a long time in “music years” — kinda like dog years, but with more sex and drugs. And for a band such as celebrated funk trio Soulive, who observed their tenth anniversary last month, it would seem a natural time for reflection. But rather than rest on their considerable laurels with a “Best Of” disc or a career retrospective, the band is taking those 10 years and turning them up to 11 with the release of Up Here, arguably their most dynamic record to date. Touring on the strength of their remarkable new effort, the band funks up the Higher Ground Ballroom this Friday, April 17, with help from up-and-coming soul man Nigel Hall and all-star horn section The Shady Horns.
