In the beginning, there was ska. And God — Coxsone Dodd, FYI — saw what He had made, decreed “pickitup” and skanked like a madman. The band He was listening to was the Skatalites, the most famous of ska’s progenitors and the godfathers of a genre that gave birth to reggae and helped punkers learn to dance. This Friday, June 22, the current incarnation of the Skatalites — which includes founding member Lester Sterling and vocalist Doreen Shaeffer — play the Higher Ground Showcase Lounge with Chicago’s Van Gordon Martin and local rude boys Husbands AKA.
