What's So Funny?

Can people really learn to make ’em laugh? Yes. Yes, they can.

Standup comedy takes guts. Actors work from scripts, usually written by someone else. Musicians can mask songwriting failings with catchy melodies or superior chops. But a comedian is entirely left to his or her own devices. Save for the occasional rubber chicken, standup comics sink or swim based only on their wits. It can be both an exhilarating and frightening proposition.... Read more

A Guy Walks Into A Bar, Revisited

Soundbites: Mark Legrand, Andy Palacio

Vermont will likely never be known as a comedic hotbed. Sure, we’ve got funny folks such as actors William H. Macy and Luis Guzman taking up part-time residence in our fair state. And of course, there’s the Green Mountains’ answer to Jeff Foxworthy: Rusty DeWees. But the chances that we’ll ever be able to support a vibrant comedy scene on par with, say, the improv circuit in Chicago, or the stand-up clubs of New York City and Los Angeles are pretty slim.... Gal Returns to Burlington with ‘Holy’ Humor

State of the Arts

It was 2001 the last time Janice Perry performed Holy Sh*t! Stories from Heaven and Hell in Burlington. Six years and several international Fulbright scholarships later, the Vermont native is reprising her one-woman show — December 15 at the FlynnSpace — along with “other work, old and new,” she says. For Perry, a.k.a. “Gal,” the evening will be something of a retrospective, representing 25 years of globetrotting gigs. For local fans, it will be a rare opportunity to take in her panty-wetting humor.... Read more

Scene@ George Carlin

Flynn Mainstage, Burlington, Saturday, October 27, 7 p.m.

If any human being ever deserved to copyright a word or phrase, “fuck” should be George Carlin’s. No single person has explored its many meanings and usages as comprehensively as the 70-year-old comedian, and few, I imagine, have uttered it with such frequency. From “Fuck Lance Armstrong, fuck Tiger Woods and fuck Dr.... Read more

Dorky Dad, Dirty Mind

Performance Preview: Bob Saget

Back in the reality TV-free 1990s, a broad-grinned comedian named Bob Saget was a major prime-time player. His boyish looks and safe-as-milk demeanor endeared him to the millions of viewers who regularly watched the family-friendly sitcom "Full House." On it, Saget played Danny Tanner, a widower raising three young girls with the help of his rockin' brother-in-law and goofy comedian buddy. But Saget's broadcast reign didn't stop there: As host of "America's Funniest Home Videos," he served as ringleader to countless amateur camera jockeys.... Read more

Despite public protests by wannabe U.S. Senator Ritchie Tarrant, comedian Al Franken came to Vermont last weekend to stump for the indie candidate, U.S. Rep. Bernie Sanders.
