ASHE FRAY
In light of the Tim Ashe story [Local Matters, August 27], below is a letter of thanks and endorsements for the September 9 primary.

As I retire from the Senate, I want to thank Chittenden County voters for their past support. It has been an honor and privilege to serve you. Looking to the future, I am confident that Chittenden County can continue to have a strong voice in Montpelier.... Read more

R.E.S.P.E.C.T.
WIC [Women, Infants and Children] isn’t the only program or organization with low standards or levels of understanding of whom they serve [“Will WIC For Food,” August 13] .

I lost my job last October and tried to apply for assistance to help take care of my family while looking for a new job. It’s nothing I wanted to do, but something I felt I had to do.... Read more

COGNITIVE DISSONANCE
Though Ken Picard’s recent article about Pine Ridge School [“Hard Lessons,” July 16] was primarily an attack on Headmaster Dana Blackhurst, in which the lone named critic lacked credibility and the others were anonymous, Picard did not bother to speak to current parents, current members of the Board of Trustees, heads of other schools or even ex-staff members who would support Dana and could provide a bigger context to this story. Picard was given those names and numbers.... Read more

WARTIME CAMPAIGNING
Kieran Michael Lalor has his history wrong when he says, “This is the first time in American history that veterans of a conflict have run for office while that conflict is going on and the outcome is in doubt” [Local Matters, July 30].

In 1864, General George McClellan was the Democratic candidate for president. While the outcome was not much in doubt by Election Day, it was certainly in doubt when the campaign began.... Read more

SABOTAGE AT PINE RIDGE
When I learned that Ken Picard was considering writing an article about the events that transpired at Pine Ridge this year I was delighted [“Hard Lessons,” July 16]. Finally, I thought, the gap between appearance and reality will be closed, and the truth will be told.... Read more

LESSONS CORRECTED
I feel compelled to respond to your article [“Hard Lessons,” July 16] to make sure that certain points are corrected. The following are the reasons your article missed the mark:

1. Mr. Blackhurst’s “FLKs” comment was not taken out of context. I was present when it was said, and it was horrid. “Out of context” really means let me cover my ass. He spun you like he does many things with his round-about talking.... Read more

Reading, Righting and Responses

Last week’s cover story on Pine Ridge School, “Hard Lessons” by Ken Picard, provoked numerous responses. Some people took issue, quite vehemently, with our depiction of the school’s troubles and its headmaster, Dana Blackhurst.

Unfortunately, those who were most angry about the accuracy and fairness of the story would not agree to have their comments published in our letters section; nor were they willing to have them edited for space, as we routinely do.... Read more

VISTA REVISITED
As a former VISTA member serving back in 1978 in St. Louis, I was taken with the article about Burlington losing 21 VISTA positions [Local Matters, July 2]. It really is a remarkable program that provides great benefits to the community as well as an amazing education to the VISTA members.... Read more

OKAY WITH THE “K”
I wanted to say that I am delighted that Seven Days is now carrying “The K Chronicles” [see page 38a]. Keith Knight and I are both San Francisco Bay area expats at this point, and I’ve been following his strip for years.

Happy to be able to read it in my favorite weekly after four years of living in Vermont.

OUTING FARO
I understand that you had every intention of promoting Faro’s artistic career by writing an article about him and his work [“Draw Like an Egyptian,” June 25]. However, I was struck by the fact that you published his real name and identity.... Read more
