How safe is that bridge? Williston’s MicroStrain has the answer

Human beings have the dubious distinction of knowing when they’re hurt. Endowed with an intricate and wondrous nervous system, we are capable of registering sensations on the wide spectrum between ecstasy and misery. Coupled with that, we have the instinct and ability to fix ourselves when we sense something’s amiss. Ironically, many of the things we trust to keep us safe — bridges and airplanes, for instance — are as dumb as doorknobs. A bridge truss doesn’t know when it’s about to fail, just as a plane’s wing can’t predict its own catastrophic demise.... Read more

They’ve Got Game

With Ann DeMarle’s popular video game courses, Champlain College levels up

On a recent Wednesday evening, four students are giving a Power Point presentation in a basement computer lab at Champlain College. On the pull-down screen hovers the cartoon figure of a kid who looks like Dennis the Menace’s slower cousin, with a propeller hat and a crooked grin.

“Our game,” a male student says, “involves Bobby here getting trapped in this crazy world by demons and trying to find his way home.”... Read more

She’s Leaving Home. Or Maybe Not

Is Vermont’s “brain drain” reality or rhetoric?

If you believe the official reports and anecdotal kvetching from some in the business community, Vermont is in the midst of a demographic shift of seismic proportions. This shift goes by many names: “youth flight,” “the gray wave” and — least flattering to those who still live here — “the brain drain.” This phenomenon, which underpins Governor Jim Douglas’ “affordability agenda,” is driven by some data that are troubling, though not surprising.... Whither manufacturing? Niche software companies take hold in Vermont

Vermont: land of maple syrup, milk, flatlander jokes and . . . software? You bet.

You don’t hear much about the state’s software companies — heck, the captive insurance industry gets more press — but there are now quite a few, and their numbers are growing.... Read more

Good to the Last Byte

Gamers who whip up virtual vittles explain the appeal

Christopher Coccaro, a 19-year-old Champlain College student sporting shaggy, shoulder-length hair and a flannel shirt, is throwing together some pork and vegetable soup. First he rapidly chops and slices a few ingredients, including a green onion, carrot and radish. He tosses the veggies into a sizzling pan and stirs them regularly to ensure they don't burn. Then he adds them to some liquid in a pot, drops in the pork and adjusts the temperature. The whole process takes around 4 minutes, but when he's done, there's no steaming bowl of soup to enjoy....
