As natural resources dwindle, Vermont’s scrap yards find business booming

In an infamous 1989 article in Harper’s, author Tom Wolfe referred to the world as the “billion-footed beast.” That metaphor is colorful, but these days it’s far from accurate: With about 6.6 billion people on the planet, humanity is closer to a 13-billion-footed beast — and growing larger every day. Census estimates indicate that the human population will reach nine billion by 2050. All those people will need a place to live, a place to work, and transport between them.... Read more

Historic "Palms"

Side Dishes

Last Sunday, The Palms Restaurant in Rutland, which has served up Italian-American cuisine since Palm Sunday 1933, celebrated its 75th — never mind having to rebuild after a devastating 1972 fire. The owners are offering a two-person, $75 dinner deal for the occasion. The price includes apps, entrées, dessert and a bottle of wine. Technically speaking, this is not an old-folks home -- it's the Our Lady of Providence Convent.... Read more

They also have a political, economic and environmental agenda. Center Street Artisans was launched with support from the Washington-based Wilderness Society. It aims to lure shoppers to the central Vermont city by offering one-of-a-kind items with earth-friendly pedigrees.... Read more

New Revenues for Rutland?

Local Matters

Is Rutland ready to become Vermont's next "It" town? Maybe not. But residents gathered for a "Creative Economy Forum" last Thursday at Three Tomatoes Trattoria on Merchants Row were exploring ways to at least give the place more life. Many in attendance complained that the central Vermont city too often approaches its problems with a "can't-do" attitude. But organizer Elizabeth Stedman of the lobbying firm Kimbell-Sherman-Ellis looked over the 150 people who'd turned out for the midday meeting and remarked, "Rutland is really ready to have this conversation."...
