The Fat Hen has been providing Vergennes residents with local produce, meats and cheeses since it opened in 2004. Now they can get whole meals there, too. Owner Heidi Markowski has hired three cooks to oversee the prepared foods section, and in about a week, the store's small commercial kitchen will feature a new convection oven. A financial dispute between the city of Vergennes and the U.S. Department of Labor has Mayor April Jin threatening to cut off police and fire protection, street lighting, road maintenance and other municipal services to the vocational training center unless the federal government pays the city $134,000 by August 13.... Vergennes is the election-year place to be for Memorial Day festivities and this year was no different. Where else could you see grown, fez-wearing men riding camel-butts on go-carts? Civil War cavalry and scruffy colonials firing muskets? Bernie Sanders in a coat and tie?

Plus, there was the jolt to the eardrums from the sudden low-level swoop by two F-16s from the Vermont Air Guard. It was a reminder of the current state of existence -- the state called war. It's actually the longest surviving state in the history of the human race.... Read more

Going Against the Current

It might seem hypocritical to erect billboards along Route 7 in Vergennes asking passersby if they're concerned about threats to Vermont's visual landscape. But that's exactly what some concerned Addison County residents did last week. Apparently, the signs don't violate Vermont's ban on billboards since they're mobile and voice a political statement. The 8-by-16-foot billboards, which hang on hay wagons, read: "Are you concerned about Vermont's scenic beauty, cancer, energy independence?" and "VELCO's power line ‘upgrade' is no answer."...
