Don't Drink and Bike

Side Dishes: Donny's serves up soft drinks

Every Tuesday night between 6 and 9 p.m., the sidewalk outside Donny's NY Pizza in Winooski is transformed into a showroom. Motorcycles of all varieties — from dirt bikes to racing bikes to Harley Davidsons — sit outside as their owners enjoy slices, bike racing or stunts on TV, and free fountain sodas. "We offer them free soda all night so we can keep them away from drinking beer and other stuff that doesn't go with riding a bike," explains Demetrios Michaelides, whose two sons Ioannis and Constantinos — both bikers themselves — own the eatery.... Colchester Housing Project Ticks Off Neighbors

Local Matters

Tim Riddle knew a large housing project was planned for the woods behind his house when he moved to Malletts Bay Avenue a couple years ago. What he didn’t know was that the developer would sell the project to a nonprofit housing group, or that the $240,000 condominiums planned for the site would be replaced by rental housing for low- and moderate-income residents.... Monkeying Around

Review: Marie Claire, Jenny Montana, Nick Jaina and Paddy Reagan at The Monkey House, Friday, March 21.

In music, as in any discipline, proficiency and professionalism only come with experience. To become truly seasoned, there is but one avenue an artist can pursue in hopes of reaching this elusive upper echelon: relentless performance.... Read more

Plan A

Hackie

Everything slows down in January, so my hopes were not high for the evening Amtrak arrival. Perhaps a stray student, or some local who extended his or her Christmas vacation — such were my wishful thoughts. Like a deer scratching the frozen tundra in quest of a few withered shrubs, I’m forced to grind it out through these sparse periods to maintain at least a meager cash flow.... Read more

Ex-Con Rehabilitation Program on Chopping Block

Local Matters

VERMONT — Most of us don’t like to hear that a convicted rapist, murderer, armed robber or pedophile is being released from prison and moving back to town. But whether you believe it’s society’s job to rehabilitate dangerous criminals or just lock them up and throw away the key, most violent felons eventually walk the streets again. And the likelihood that those ex-cons will succeed in becoming safe and productive members of society is often determined by their ability to find housing, jobs and a network of friends and family that can keep them out of trouble.... After Revitalization and Re-assessment, Winooski Takes on the Tax Man

Local Matters

WINOOSKI — When the City of Winooski worked out a deal with the state to pour $174 million into its downtown infrastructure, local officials promised taxpayers they wouldn’t have their pockets pilfered to help pay for the improvements. Even Governor James Douglas offered his support, repeatedly touting the effort as a model for smart urban growth. The downtown revitalization project was the largest ever attempted in Vermont and, at the time of its approval in 2004, was the largest state-guaranteed project in the country.... Read more

Scene@ Trunk Show

Winooski, Thursday, June 7, 7-9 p.m.

A fashion trunk show at the Green Closet has the buzz of an art opening. I was barely in the door when owner Xmas Maxon-Alley descended and offered me a glass of wine. Not to mention cheese, crackers and dried cherries. Eighties music played from somewhere. The goldenrod-colored walls were artfully lined with a mix of vintage and indie-designed dresses and shirts, secondhand cowboy boots, pillbox hats and very cool jeans.... Read more

A New Brew

Blue Star's bringing on the beans

Signs of the Times

State of the Arts

Downtown Winooski is slowly blossoming: The roundabout is completed, students have moved in, and a couple new bar-restaurants are shaping up the wine-and-dine scene. It was just a matter of time before the Onion City got an art gallery and tattoo studio. This month both will open in the form of Aartistic Inc. - and that double "a" is not a typo. Jessica Bridge, owner of 1/2 Lounge in Burlington, is launching the combo body- and wall-art business with partners Tyre and Gina DuVernay.... Read more
