Hip Hula

Theater Preview: Keo Woolford’s I Land

Who is the true Hawaiian, or kama’aina, in this group: Senator and presidential candidate Barack Obama, famously the son of a white mother and black Kenyan father; Keo Woolford, actor, singer and hula dancer of Asian and Pacific Island ancestry; or yours truly, granddaughter of Irish immigrants? It’s a trick question, because the answer is all three. Being Hawaiian is not about “the blood quantum,” Woolford explains, even though a “mainlander” would probably label him the true “Islander” and discount Obama and me.... Read more

Star Turn

Montpelier’s Tim Tavcar takes a Giant step

When a wild-eyed man in a red feather boa appeared on Seven Days’ B Section cover two weeks ago, the box-office phones went crazy at Lost Nation Theater in Montpelier. Because of the July 4 holiday on Wednesday, the paper hit the streets on Thursday — normally the theater’s slowest night.... Read more

An Actor Prepared...

Hardwick actor Edgar Davis turns in a powerfully taut performance as Walter Lee Younger

Hardwick may be a long, long way from Hollywood, but for the past two years, it's hosted a rare dramatic talent. In the summer of 2005, local resident and actor Edgar Davis wowed Vermont audiences in two Unadilla Theater productions by South African playwright Athol Fugard: Master Harold and the Boys and The Island. More recently, he's come down from the hills to steal another show, as the lead in the current Champlain Theatre at Champlain College production of A Raisin in the Sun. A St.... Read more

Classical Urban Ambassador

Music Preview: Daniel Bernard Roumain

Harlem-based violinist, composer and educator Daniel Bernard Roumain hardly looks the part of a classical music aesthete. With his flowing braids and multiple piercings, Roumain, a.k.a. DBR, seems more suited to a high-test funk band than a string ensemble. Actually, he's at home in either one.... Read more

Holy Role

Actor Tracey Girdich goes undercover as a born-again for The Bus

Tracey Girdich does not believe that Jesus is her personal savior. But for the past four Sundays, she's surrounded herself with people who do.

She's an evangelical Christian's dream come true: a non-believer who walks through the church doors on Sunday, then returns week after week to hear more. Except that this sinner isn't actually thinking about joining up; she's just doing her due diligence as an actor.... Read more

Dorky Dad, Dirty Mind

Performance Preview: Bob Saget

Back in the reality TV-free 1990s, a broad-grinned comedian named Bob Saget was a major prime-time player. His boyish looks and safe-as-milk demeanor endeared him to the millions of viewers who regularly watched the family-friendly sitcom "Full House." On it, Saget played Danny Tanner, a widower raising three young girls with the help of his rockin' brother-in-law and goofy comedian buddy. But Saget's broadcast reign didn't stop there: As host of "America's Funniest Home Videos," he served as ringleader to countless amateur camera jockeys.... Read more

Building Characters

Theater Preview: The Riot Group

From the moment he picks up the phone in northern New Jersey, Adriano Shaplin begins to reveal himself: he's just poured himself a cup of coffee and grabbed an Oreo from the freezer. We begin the interview discussing the addictive qualities of specific junk foods -- a playwright and a journalist comparing notes on the guilty-pleasure fats and sugars we crave when writing. I tell him I don't allow that particularly dangerous Nabisco narco-cookie in my house, because one bag becomes a single serving.... Read more

McKenzie's Lead

Keeping up with Burlington's biggest ballet success

When he was dancing full-time with American Ballet Theatre in the 1980s, Burlington native Kevin McKenzie was its preeminent prince. The tall, dark danseur noble brought dramatic intelligence and a graceful gallantry to the stage, whether he was playing romantic Romeo or the "Champion Roper" in "Rodeo." He also distinguished himself as a sensitive and gifted partner, supporting ballerinas such as Cynthia Gregory, Sylvie Guillem and Martine van Hamel -- now his life partner. New Yorker dance critic Arlene Croce once dubbed him the "Jeremy Irons of ballet."... Read more
