Scene@ Champlain College Historical Buildings Tour

Burlington, Saturday, June 28, Noon

As part of its “50 Years on the Hill” anniversary celebration last weekend, Champlain College threw open the doors of its historic buildings to all comers. I worried I’d be getting a watered-down admissions tour, but Champlain cut out the droning guides and simply gave the community an all-access pass to explore.... Read more

Scene@ “Hungry For Change” Bake Sale

Burlington, Saturday, June 21, 11 A.M.

I spotted numerous “Obama for President” signs scattered across the lawn on the corner of Intervale and Riverside avenues, and knew I was in the right place. Music was blaring and excitement was in the air. The occasion was a bake sale to benefit Senator Barack Obama’s presidential campaign.

Across the nation there were more than 700 bake sales like Burlington’s. MoveOn.org, a political action organization working to get progressive candidates elected, coordinated these “Hungry for Change” events.... Read more

Scene@ “Scrub-A-Pup”

Burlington YMCA, Saturday, June 14, 12-4 P.M.

The dog days of summer were off to a fresh start Saturday in downtown Burlington. My new puppy was at the vet, but I still took the chance to visit some four-legged friends including Jack Russell terriers, golden retrievers and various mixed breeds at the “Scrub-A-Pup” YMCA fundraiser.

A volunteer named Julia told me that the idea for the dog wash came as a creative alternative to a car wash. Plus, as an organization all about family, it seemed right to include the beloved family pets.

“In case I didn’t want a dog already, now I really do!” added Julia.... Read more

Scene@ Green Mountain Motorheads Car Show

Main Street, Barre, Saturday, June 7, 3 P.M.

Before exploring the Green Mountain Motorheads Car Show in Barre this weekend, I had to get myself in the right state of mind. So, I stopped at the Pit Stop Diner on Main St. for a dose of NASCAR memorabilia and a bacon cheeseburger.... Read more

Scene@ Zappa Night

Glover Town Hall, Saturday, May 31, 8 p.m.

When I think of Frank Zappa, the word “fundraiser” does not spring to mind. So when I heard about “Zappa Night,” a benefit for the Glover Public Library, it seemed too intriguing to miss.
I knew I was in the right place when I heard Zappa’s music emanating from the Town Hall, which is a small room with a hardwood floor and two basketball hoops on either end. I entered, sat on the stage, and watched as Zappa heads filled the room. They each walked in with different instruments and facial hair, but most brought along a six-pack.... Read more

Scene@ Super Bowl Party

Unwinders Bar, Colchester, Sunday, February 3, 5 P.M.

Colchester’s new Unwinders bar, perched right on the edge of St. Michael’s College campus, is the perfect cocktail of bar clichés, fusing a “hole-in-the-wall” atmosphere with 1970s-style furnishings. This former American Legion jaunt features a popular Big Buck Hunter Pro arcade machine, Pleather-lined tables and two beers on tap — one for the less discerning (Bud Light) and one for the more discriminating palate (Switchback). Unwinders’ Super Bowl Party was a hoot, with its cross-section of two worlds: the local “been there, done that” crowd and the hard-partying St.... Read more

Scene@ Intuitive Counselor and Medium Nan O’Brien’s Anniversary Tour

St. Albans, Saturday, January 26, 8 P.M.

Last Saturday night, some 80 people packed the back room at Chow! Bella restaurant to hear intuitive counselor and medium Nan O’Brien draw spiritual energy from the cosmos and give it voice. The seventh of 10 stops on a tour marking the one-year anniversary of her first appearance on Star 92.9’s “Lana and Nolan in the Morning” show, the $35-a-head event sold out in a matter of days.... Scene@ Yankee Sportsman’s Classic Hunting, Fishing Outdoor Rec. Show

Champlain Valley Expo, Essex Junction, Saturday, January 19, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Last weekend was a bonanza for those whose sights were trained on acquiring the newest guns, ammo, bows, arrows and camo gear, and yet another reason for critters in the North Country to indulge their anxiety disorders. The area was host to both the Green Mountain Gun & Knife Show at the South Burlington Holiday Inn and the Yankee Sportsman’s Classic at the Expo. The former was a more basic ogle-and-handle adventure in firearm display. I chose the latter, a more diverse and esoteric journey into the culture of animal dispatching.... Read more

Scene@ Vermont Fancy Felines Cat Show

Sheraton Hotel, South Burlington, Saturday, January 5, 2 P.M.

I grew up with a beloved Irish setter and now allow an equally beloved, 20-pound Siamese to sit on me at every opportunity, so I’ve never bought into the idea of the world’s neat division into “dog people” and “cat people.” After a few hours wandering the aisles at the Vermont Fancy Felines Club’s annual show, though, I’m willing to consider folks who are committed to raising and showing any animal a breed apart.... Scene@ Experimental Music Concert

Kriya Studio, Burlington, Saturday, December 8, 7:30 P.M.

Under Kriya Studio’s huge ceiling, a star-shaped paper lantern and separate strands of red, white and turquoise holiday lights illuminated the spacious stage, and amplification equipment encircled the seating area.... Read more
