Vermont Leftist Chronicled in New Graphic Bio

State of the Arts

Vermont’s historic contribution to the development of the American left is most famously embodied in Bernie Sanders, the independent socialist who broke through to electoral success. But Vermont was also home for many years to a lesser-known figure: Murray Bookchin, who revived the anarchist tradition and melded it with an influential green critique of centralized industrial society.... “Dykes to Watch Out For” Goes on Hiatus

State of the Arts

Check out the episode of “Dykes to Watch Out For” that appears in Section B of this week’s Seven Days. It’s the last one you’ll see “for the foreseeable future,” says Bolton cartoonist Alison Bechdel.

Last week, Bechdel announced she’s taking a break from her biweekly comic strip, which chronicles the adventures of a group of lesbians and their non-lesbian pals. “I’m calling it a sabbatical,” she explains.... Read more

Kochalka Hears a Boo

Burlington’s “superstar” makes more comics for kiddies

It’s hard to tell the difference between what James Kochalka does for fun and what he does for work. The Burlington comic artist’s day job as a stay-at-home father of two — Eli, 4-and-a-half, and Oliver, 6 months — might sound like work, but the tots are his central inspiration and key artistic collaborators.... Vermont Cartoonist Finds Success with Rejection

State of the Arts

Harry Bliss swears that Louise, the Adventures of a Chicken is his last children’s book. The South Burlington illustrator has been “sweating over” the 52-page picture book written by children’s author Kate DiCamillo, and he’s getting cranky. Oh, he’s plenty grateful for the nine that came before it — five of them were on the New York Times Bestseller list, and three made number one. But he wants more time to devote to his first love: cartooning.... Read more

New Toons

Heavy Metal Mechas

When Seven Days cancelled its long-running, but slowly dwindling, “Pop Ten” feature a few months back, we promised the vacated section would be filled with an entertaining assortment of musical odds and ends, rants and raves, or “whatever the hell we feel like printing from week to week.” And we’ve delivered. From live reviews and extended profiles to interviews and the occasional opinion piece, the section — affectionately dubbed “The Hole” — is like a newsprint version of a mix-tape. That is, if people still made mix-tapes. But we digress.... Read more

Book Review: James Sturm's America: God, Gold, and Golems

I'd bet anything that James Sturm is a picker of scabs. The part-time Vermont resident and director of White River Junction's Center for Cartoon Studies specializes in graphic novels chronicling historical wounds, from scrapes to gashes. Like humorist and National Public Radio commentator Sarah Vowell, Sturm is interested in the personal stories that combine to make up a big historical fact. But Sturm's fictional tales, in their particular tragic absurdity, give us more than social history — they give us art.... Read more
