Curses, Foiled Again A 23-year-old burglar broke into a funeral home in Burjassot, Spain, but neighbors heard him forcing open the front door and called the police. He tried to fool officers by lying on a table in a glass-enclosed chamber used for viewings and pretending to be dead. His ruse didn’t work, according to a local police official, because they saw him breathing. Plus, the official said, “The custom here is for dead people to be dressed in suits, in nice clothes that look presentable. This guy was in everyday clothes that were wrinkled and dirty.”... Curses, Foiled Again Christopher Allen Koch, 28, pulled into a bank parking lot in Liberty, Pa., and, according to police, waited in his car for about 20 minutes before heading for the bank entrance wielding a shotgun and wearing an orange ski mask. The door was locked, however, because the bank had closed a minute earlier. Employees inside spotted Koch and got a license plate number that led police to him, along with the gun and the mask.... Curses, Foiled Again Baltimore transit authorities said Issac Ray Dunn, 58, boarded the city’s light rail system but failed to show a ticket when asked. Curses, Foiled Again While sitting in an unmarked vehicle on a stakeout to catch an arsonist in Lambertville, Mich., sheriff’s Detective Thomas Redmond reported the 17-year-old suspect approached the vehicle carrying a bucket, unscrewed the gas cap and started siphoning gas. Curses, Foiled Again As Tiffany Vance and Christopher Egnatz were finishing their meal at an Applebee's restaurant in Schererville, Ind., Vance complained loudly about finding worms in her salad. Servers let the couple walk out on their $57 tab, but Vance left her purse behind. The Post-Tribune of Northwest Indiana reported that while searching for identification to return the purse, a server found a plastic container of bee moth worms. Anderson, 51, tried to apply for welfare benefits in Lee County, Va., but was arrested after arousing suspicion by arriving in a 2004 H2 Hummer with Michigan plates. “We thought it was unusual that a high-dollar vehicle with out-of-state tags would be at the department of social services,” County Sheriff Gary Parsons said. “So we ran the tag and found out that it was stolen.”... Curses, Foiled Again Authorities investigating the theft of an antique slot machine worth $4000 from a home in Sutherlin, Ore., identified the culprit as a 30-year-old man whose wife filed an insurance claim to cover damage to their van during the burglary. Douglas County sheriff’s deputies said the machine tipped over as he drove away, breaking the van’s window. Curses, Foiled Again New York City prosecutors accused undercover police detective Sean Johnstone, 34, of tampering with drug evidence after listening to a tape recording of him confiding to another officer that he and his partner kept 11 of 28 bags of cocaine they had confiscated from a suspect. The incriminating evidence was provided by Johnstone himself, who investigators said apparently didn’t realize a hidden recording device he was wearing was switched on.
