In an electoral landmark almost as shocking as the U.S. (finally) choosing a black man for president, Afro-funk fusion ensemble Rubblebucket Orchestra took home the 2008 Seven Daysies award for “Best New Vermont Band.” Given their penchant for hooky, bombastic grooves and superior chops, the accolade is certainly well deserved. But here’s the stunner: They’re technically from Boston — though a couple of members do actually reside in the Green Mountains and most have strong Vermont ties. Oh, democracy! We should spread you everywhere. And we should start this Thursday in South Burlington at the Higher Ground Ballroom as the best new Vermont band from Jamaica Plain unleashes their high-octane freedom funk with fellow Beantowners Spiritual Rez and another excellent pseudo-Vermont outfit, “hip-pop” up and comers Strength in Numbers.
