Bringin' Beer To Barre
Barre's "Bud Hill" at Thunder Road might need a name change. The hardscrabble Central Vermont burg is getting its first brewpub. Granite City Brewing started as a hobby for Bud and Jason Stevens. But now, the Barre-based brothers have plans to open a 65-seat pub, a two-barrel brewery and a bigger version of their current home-brewing supply shop in the Lash Furniture Building.
But even with such schemes in the works, both brothers intend to keep their second jobs for now - Jason works at Black River Produce, Bud at Teradyne.
The Black River connection will come in handy. Jason, who will be in charge of the kitchen, hopes to offer "very basic" food with "lots of local stuff, Vermont products." He's thinking about including pizza made from scratch, salads, soups and wings when the place opens in early April.
To complement the food, Jason says the brothers want to brew "a range of everything" from lighter, easy-drinking beers to ambers, brown ales and darker styles. "It would be nice to have 12 beers on tap by the end of the year," he says. That may be a tall order, considering that they can presently only brew a single variation at time.
What was the motivation to expand their business? "Barre needs something and we think we can provide it, so we're going to try," Jason suggests.
