Vermont All State Jazz Ensemble take the stage before two musical titans step up with "Cubano Be Cubano Bop: A Tribute to Chano Pozo and Dizzy Gillespie."

Feelin' Dizzy

At Carnegie Hall in 1947, Dizzy Gillespie and “Congo King” Chano Pozo irreversibly altered the course of American jazz. Their landmark performance was among the earliest fusions of be-bop and Afro-Cuban jazz, paving the way for generations of musicians to come, including legendary conguero Poncho Sanchez and famed composer and bandleader Terence Blanchard. Sanchez and Blanchard have teamed up to pay tribute to that seminal moment in jazz history with “Cubano Be Cubano Bop,” in which the two recreate the show and add their own compositions. Catch “Cubano Be Cubano Bop” on Friday, June 10, at the Flynn MainStage as part of the 2011 Burlington Discover Jazz festival. The Vermont All State Jazz Ensemble opens.
