Metaphysical Therapy

If there is a God who is both omniscient and benevolent, why does evil exist? All through recorded history, humanity has wrestled with the question of why bad things happen to good people. But is the conception of the devil merely a convenient cloven-hoofed scapegoat? What is evil, anyway? Lawyer and UVM philosophy professor Don Loeb surveys moral and ethical approaches to malevolence in the second of four lectures that coincide with Lent. The series continues on March 15 with UVM education professor Robert Nash’s summary of what secular humanists think about innate badness, and how various social, religious and political systems are set up to deal with it. Tune in March 22 to hear an evangelical Christian point of view from the pastor of Williston’s Christ Memorial Church.
