They say some people can move mountains. If Marta Gómez did geographically what she does vocally — interweave sounds from all over South America and beyond into original world-music tunes — she’d be one of them. Colombian-born Gómez and her five-member band bring freshness to indigenous South American folk music by infusing it with Latin American rhythms, Caribbean enthusiasm, and jazz and pop elements. Taken together, their distinctive sounds are a taste of the continent’s rich culture and heritage — and prompted the Los Angeles Times to say of Gómez, “Anybody who comes here to make music this beautiful should automatically be given citizenship for making our country, and the world, a better place.” Someone, alert the authorities!
