Man Under Cover

In 1970, the Beatles split up. Simon & Garfunkel went their separate ways — for the first time, anyway. The year signified the end of a music era, but, as eras are wont to do, a new one was on its way in. Marc Cohn, the gravel-voiced singer now best known for “Walking in Memphis,” spent much of that landmark year glued to the turntables in John Wade Records, and his latest album, Listening Booth: 1970, flashes back to those formative tunes. Each reworked selection — Cat Stevens’ “Wild World” is stripped down and swingy; Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed” takes on a touch of country twang — makes the familiar fresh again.
