To the casual observer, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey may read like the name of some animatronic Disneyland ride. And in a strange sort of way, that’s actually not terribly far off the mark — minus the Disneyland ride. Equal parts technical virtuosity and aural alchemy, the Tulsa trio draws as much influence from post-rock and electronica as they do “traditional” and improvisational jazz. They are a sonic enigma, inviting listeners on an always thrilling and sometimes perilous journey through the vast landscape of sound.
