From the beauty salon of last year’s Steel Magnolias to the quirkier abandoned-church-turned-day-spa setting of this week’s The Hallelujah Girls, strong roles for female actors prevail. Anything but formulaic, this Southern-style comedy directed by Carole Vasta Folley proves that life “over the hill” is still a bumpy, hilarious ride. Gathering regularly at the Spa-Dee-Dah! day spa, a cluster of middle-aged women stick together through zany situations, marriage proposals and run-ins with an archenemy.
