What are you favorite veggie cold/flu comfort foods?

My boyfriend and I are both down with a stomach bug right now and I'm wondering what to make for dinner (I'm feeling a little better and up to cooking). I think I'm going to make this mild wonton soup with some plain toast (maybe a smidge of Vegemite on mine). The recipe is from epicurious, but I find the dumpling instructions weird so I'm just going to make them the way I always do (along with a lot of extras for freezing).

    *  1 pound sweet potatoes
    * 1 tablespoon canola oil
    * 2 cloves garlic, chopped
    * 1 shallot, chopped
    * 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes
    * 1/2 teaspoon salt
    * 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
    * 4 cups sliced bok choy
    * 1 cup bean sprouts
    * 1 cup edamame, shelled
    * 12 wonton wrappers
    * 3 tablespoons white miso, plus more to taste
    * 2 scallions, thinly sliced

Heat oven to 375°F. Prick holes in potatoes. Bake on a baking sheet until soft, turning once, about 1 hour. Cool, then peel and mash. Heat oil in a small skillet over medium heat. Cook garlic and shallot, stirring, until fragrant, 1 to 2 minutes. Add pepper flakes. Stir garlic mixture, salt and pepper into potatoes. Place bok choy, sprouts and edamame in a pot with 2 cups water and set aside. Lay 1 wonton wrapper in palm of hand. Drop a heaping tablespoon of potato mixture in the center and make a fist to gather edges. Repeat with remaining wrappers and filling. Set dumplings on top of vegetables in pot. Bring to a boil. Cook, covered, until wrappers are translucent, 3 to 6 minutes. Divide veggies and dumplings among 4 bowls. Add 4 cups water to pot. Bring to a boil. Remove from heat. Add miso, stirring until it dissolves. Divide among bowls; top with scallions.

I find that nothing helps an upset stomach like strong ginger tea. The one at Caribbean Buffet will knock your socks off.

When I had swine flu a couple of months ago, the only thing that I was really happy to eat was Chicken McNuggets. Otherwise, Mrs. Grass soup is good. Dropping the little egg in the pot could lift anyone's spirits. As for things that are actually good for you, I'm a strong believer in Uncle Sam's cereal, eaten dry.

Applesauce, grits, cream of wheat, mrs. grass broth (like Alice suggested), soupy rice, bananas on toast, yogurts.

I usually make a seriously garlicky chicken soup starting with Mrs. Grass as the base.  Garlic supposedly helps boost the immune system, but even if it doesn't, the soup is incredibly soothing and easy on the tummy.

Garlic-Ginger-Lemon-Honey(-and sometimes bourbon) Tea

this is my go to recipe for stomach and other bugs

for one person:
take about a small thumb's size of ginger and slice thinly
take about 5 cloves of garlic, slice thinly
simmer in 2 mugs worth of water for about 15 minutes
let cool to just above drinking temp
add lemon, honey (i sometimes throw in some random lemon/echinacea herb tea for good measure)
and sometimes if i want to assure a nice nights sleep a dash (or so) of bourbon.

strain into mugs. drink right before bed, get under the covers sleep well!!
(you might sweat a little. it's worth it!)
good luck and feel better

Thanks everyone! We are both feeling better. The soup was good (although the recipe is mysteriously bland so I made it with a base of minced garlic, shallot, and ginger sauteed in a little dark sesame oil). The best thing for my boyfriend turned out to be charred Pepperidge Farm cinnamon raisin toast!

That tea sounds amazing... I'll have to print that out to save for next time we get sick. Smiley

If your tummy is feeling extremely sensitive after a round of stomach flu or mysterious pain, it might be best to stick to BRAT for a day or so...
Banana
Rice
Applesauce
Toast (minimal amount of butter or jam for flavor)

Avoid things that are harder to digest, such as legumes.  I like to have cans of Amy's No Chicken Noodle Soup around for when my tummy can move beyond BRAT, and I imagine regular Chicken Noodle Soup would work fine, too.  Wink

BRAT is great advice! I am unfortunately very familiar with the BRAT diet because I have chronic GI problems and have to take loads of medications, some of which cause additional nausea. This time my boyfriend was sicker than I was and he doesn't like bananas or applesauce and said that rice made him feel too full. Some other things that help me are:

Instant miso soup (the kind with the little freeze dried tofu bits!)
Fat free saltines
Gingerale but stir it a little to get some of the carbonation out
Boiled potatoes
Sports drinks mixed with juice (don't help with nausea but make a huge difference in hydration and feeling better overall)
Try to keep everything a little closer to room temperature than you might otherwise prefer. Very hot or very cold can upset your stomach.
