I'm so obsessed with hitting weird little ethnic markets (This is my favorite. I call it the Cute Little Lady and her Cute Little Dog Store. Yes a dog works in that food purveyor.), that I had never made time to hit the big farmer's markets in Montréal until recently.

You hear a lot about the wonderful produce at Jean Talon Market, and indeed, even in winter it was beautiful. There were tons of yellow raspberries, one of my favorite things. What you don't hear about as much is the meat. When I walked into Boucherie Prince Noir, I screamed a little. You know those plastic dividers which separate different artists' CDs at record stores? They have those, but instead of names, they have silhouettes of animals, from duck to goose, caribou to buffalo. It is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

It doesn't stop there. A whole corridor in the market proper is devoted to butcher shops and there's more outside. I bought some filet mignon of emu, a glowingly pink four-bone rack of pork for $8 Canadian, a ballotine of chicken in ham filled with raclette and pears and even a terrine of wapiti and cranberries that looked like a cupcake. I can't wait to go back!

Do you have any Montréal market favorites?

Lots of 'em. I love Milano, the Italian grocery on St. Laurent, just a few blocks from the Jean Talon Market.

While I generally prefer Jean-Talon to the Atwater Market, the latter does have the advantage of being right on the Lachine Canal Bikepath. And it also has my favorite store in Montreal, Les Douceurs.

The single best source of food information in Montreal: markets, gourmet shops, and restaurants, is a blog by AJ Kinik. You can find it at http://www.endlessbanquet.blogspot.com. (Note the Montreal A-Z guide down the left side of the front page.) Related to that, there's now an interactive map of AJ's references. Bookmark it; it's indispensable. http://www.michaelmulley.com/aebmap/
