I am not a fan of onions. My mother and both my brothers can't stand them either, so I'm assuming it's a weird genetic tag we all share. My brother Volodia, who's a chef, rarely uses them in his cooking and no one seems to mind. In my job, I get stuck eating onion tarts or onion soups occasionally. I'm getting over it. Raw onions, however, just fill my mouth with horror. What's your big yuck?

I despise onions, too! And so does my aunt Dena. We can detect a single scrap of onion on a pizza or in a potato salad, even when eating from the opposite side of the dish. Red onions are the worst. When I was a toddler I pulled up all the onions in my parents' garden and chucked them into the woods, hoping (I suppose) that this would prevent any of the vile vegetable from gaining entry to the home.

Also do not care for any seafood, cilantro, grapefruit, coffee, green tea, liver, most alcoholic drinks. It's funny because I'm not exactly a "picky" eater and always want to try new things. I was in England last spring and ordered everything from mushy peas to black pudding, but lots of things that are yummy to most people are just too bitter for me. It has been suggested that I might be a supertaster - have you ever heard of that?

Cilantro, eggplant, and zucchini are the ones that popped into my head immediately. Wink

i am honestly having a hard time thinking of anything...
let's see:
i don't like gummy candy or candy corn.
i am not a real big fan of licorice or anise flavored stuff

i'm curious, because i have heard of it before, but do those of you who don't like cilantro find it tastes anything vaguely soap-ish? i've herd that people either completely dislike or really like cilantro.

i don't like any colas.

i'll have to think about this one some more...

The dislike of cilantro is a genetic marker. Smiley  For those with the right set of genes, it tastes soapy or like pennies.  For me it tastes soapy.  Makes things it is in taste a bit chemical-y to me.  My husband likens it to pennies.

I agree about the licorice and anise, I don't like either of those.

I don't like fish sauce, or really fishy smelling things. Smiley  Though I love fish in general. Smiley

I dislike licorice/anise also! Although I do have a strong and overriding nostalgic attachment to Absinthe and Pernod due to a misspent youth.

Cilantro tastes like pennies with a hint of bitter dirt to me. My boyfriend is also of the pennies people. One of the reasons I make our own fresh spring rolls at home is so that I can make them with basil instead of cilantro (as they often come in restaurants).

I hate onions too. Although, if they are cooked in a soup I can deal with them. My dad used to own a restaurant and he would eat them raw by the handful. Yuck. Tongue One thing I really hate that hasn't been mentioned on here is water chestnuts. I always pick them out of my chinese takeout. I can't stand them, the texture is so weird.

Here are my dislikes:

Liver and Offal in general: the metal tinged, mushy, bloody organs are just plain disgusting, IMO, to the point where I involuntarily gag if I try to eat them.  As a result, I gave up trying.  On a lesser note, I can eat pate and this past weekend had foie gras meatballs with homemade tagliatelle in Minneapolis and it was FANTASTIC !!!

Cilantro: put me in the corner of detergent.  In small amounts, I can tolerate it but would prefer to leave it out.

Warm Tuna Fish:  The thought of Tuna Pea Wiggle, Tuna Noodle Casserole, or even a Tuna Melt brings on naseau.  I will eat tuna salad (cold) or grilled tuna steak.

Sea Urchin:  G-R-O-S-S

Fish Sauce:  Hmm, fermented fish innards that site in vats in the sun for months.  Yup, it tastes about as good as it sounds.

Creme Brulee and custard.  I just do not care for these.  I am not sure if I HATE them but I would not care if I ever ate them.  This means I do not like Boston Creme donuts!  What is funny is that my mother ate TONS of custard when she was pregnant with me!  She craved it like crazy!!!!
I love pudding, however!
I do not like buttermilk as a beverage!  I hate Doritios! blah!  Are they really food?
I do not eat meat.

My boyfriend hates mayonnaise. Although "hate" doesn't really describe it adequately. It's like very intense loathing crossed with equally intense phobic fear.

He also dislikes ranch dressing, orange macaroni and cheese, zucchini and other gourds, artificial mint, parsley, and cilantro.

The cilantro thing really shocks me. It seems like I'm the only one on the board who likes it. Far from a soapy taste, I think it has the most refreshing essence of summer in every bite.

I wonder what the genetic tag is that differentiates the soap tasters from the summer tasters. I would love to see more research!

I was shocked by the onions thing, myself. Smiley  I've been doing some basic googling and trying to find a good citation of the cilantro thing, but I haven't got a lot of time to put into this today. Sorry! Smiley

There are a few: brussel sprouts (lame, I know!), my grandmother's haggis, cauliflower with cheese, tobasco and trifle. A very strange list, probably stemming from familial history and disgusting dinner table memories. I find the cilantro interesting as well: I love it, especially in the summertime--I find that it adds that perfect refreshing bit to my mouth.

The I Hate Cilantro blog is fabulous! I went to check out the link you posted, Molly, and the top post was all about the word cilantro in different foreign languages — to ensure that you can always ask to have cilantro removed from your meal anywhere in the world! Amazing. I never really realized people's hatred ran that deep. While I know that many of my friends have always hated it, I (a cilantro lover) always thought people were just being picky or pretending or something.
