If you are from the Albany, NY area, you know what a Fish Fry is.  This is a fried piece of fish (cod, haddock, pollock, cusk) served on a hot dog roll.  The fish is breaded and always hangs over the end of the roll on both ends.  The sandwich can be served plain or with tartar, cocktail, or my personal favorite, chili sauce.  Also, a combination of chili sauce and tartar is good as well.  Their are numerous places to try this unique item including Ted's (multiple locations including Latham, Watervliet, and Troy), Bob and Ron's (downtown Albany, one of the originals and still one of the best), Ankers (Schenectady), and many more.  I have always been curious why this has not caught on beyond that area.  If you have had one, you know how great they are (pollock being the least best option).  Served up hot and fresh with french fries and a cold Coke, it is the stuff memories are made of .........................................

It might not be the most homegrown option, but have you ever seen a Sea Dog? It's fish shaped to look like a hot dog coated in a Harpoon beer-based batter. I've seen them at both Rozzi's and Handy's. Obviously not exactly what you're looking for, but possibly better than nothing.
