Hi! I have some friends visiting from North Carolina in a couple of weeks. One things they're really, really interested in exploring in the Burlington area is doughnuts! From an email:

"Top priority is, of course, independent doughnut shops. It may stun you to hear that, in the south, we have Dunkin' and we have Krispy Kreme. The true craft of doughnut making is dead here, if it ever even was alive. When we're in the northeast we like to get our fill. Know of any good ones?"

I know about Dinky Donuts and places like Cold Hollow Cider Mill where you can get fresh cider doughnuts, any other suggestions?

Thanks!
Molly

Normally I don't have leftover cider donuts, but this week I did because of being ill.  So I made bread pudding with the stale donuts, BIG HIT! Smiley  They were Cold Hollow.

Other than that, I have no idea about independent donut shops.  As far as I know we don't have any in the Montpelier/Barre area.

Yeah, I think that Dinky Donuts is really the place to go - especially because it's such a nice drive down to Middlebury from Burlington. We can stop at Shelburne Orchards and Honey Gardens apiary, too! Then Otter Creek brewing and Otter Creek Bakery while we're down there.

A few people have told me that The Quality Bake Shop in Essex has good doughnuts but I have never had them.  I like the cider doughnuts at Shelburne Orchards!

I got burned on quality bakeshop several years ago.  I was hoping to find a great bakery like the one near my husband's family home in Centereach Long Island, but no joy there.

Maybe I'll give them another chance, but the things we got there (cake and cookies) were dry and tasteless. Maybe they've improved or I picked the wrong things to buy. Smiley

The jelly donuts at the Quality Bake Shop are the only thing worth buying.  They are very good, but everything else is dreadful.

Cold Hollow Cider donuts -  worth the drive especially now that all the tourists have cleared out. They use boiled cider instead of just juice to make them so they are extra cidery.   Ask/wait for hot ones.

If you don't mind making a little drive, Jana's Cupboard (under new ownership but still the same recipes) has AMAZING doughnuts!!!

My boyfriend and I got Cold Hollow Doughnuts last weekend! That's such a great fall drive through Waterbury and Stowe - hit Ben and Jerry's, the Cabot outlet, Lake Champlain Chocolates, Cider Mill, Stowe village, and a stroll around the Trapp lodge grounds.

I know cider doughnuts are rustic and cute. I like them as much as the next guy, but what we really need in Burlington is something like this. I betcha no place in Vermont has a doughnut-themed wedding chapel.
