At the Vermont Cheesemakers Festival last Sunday, I ended up in discussions with several people about which local breads were the best. I am partial to Gerard's slightly sour loaves myself, and am always thrilled to see that a restaurant carries Red Hen. Many people on Sunday called O Bread their favorite. What's yours?

Gerard makes fantastic bread.  Anybody who loves bread needs to try it.

More great bread comes from Adam's Village Bakery.

Elmore Mountain Bakery has been tasty in the past.

There's something common amongst the bakers mentioned above.  They are small, hard to find, and are not generally well known.  That's both the frustrating and spectacular thing about where we live.  Little surprises like these are around every corner--but you have to look and take chances.  Ask whenever there are people willing to answer.

Now I want some bread...

To date, the best bread I have had in this area is from Good Companion.  The bakery is in Ferrisburgh and can be purchased at the Williston Farmer's Market.  I'm sure there are outher outlets that carry their items as well.  Stewarts also makes a great product (Hannaford carries it), Red Hen's seeded baguette is tough to beat, and Crescent Moon (St.Albans) is certainly missed since their closing.
