As an educator, I see public schools as a very powerful place to change the world - and not only in the cafeteria.

This summer I taught a summer program with a social studies/science/english curriculum focused on food from a scientific, political and nutritional perspective. A joint effort of including local foods in the cafeteria, as well as a syllabus for use in health and social studies classes to help students delve into the complexity of the corporate food system vs. local food systems can create informed students who can make powerful choices for themselves and their families as they become consumers. As a part of the generation that was taught about recycling through public school programs, I truly see the possibilities in a public school campaign. If we can work together to create a web-based resource of classroom activities, contact info of local farmers willing to host/talk to classes, and various online films (like The Meatrix and True Cost of Food) for teachers, I think we could open many minds to the importance, community rewards and overall yumminess of supporting local food systems.
