After traditional midnight celebrations marking the turn of the twelvemonth, most folks aren’t ready for an early wakeup and physical exertion. But there’s a lot to be said for getting out in the fresh air just hours into the new year. Weather permitting — and snow doesn’t really count — scores of runners will do just that during RunVermont’s annual First Run race around the Queen City’s downtown. It’s no marathon, but 5K will get your heart rate up, and silly costumes are encouraged. Kids can join in for a fun-run segment, and registration fees include post-race food and entry into a raffle for running gear. Not the type to go the distance? Volunteers can still enjoy the chipper attitude of those willing to leg it when most are sleeping off the previous night’s party.
