OLDIES AND GOODIES

Ed Winant opened Old Gold in 1974, and that’s about the same vintage of some of the store’s wares. The funky, candy-colored ethos of the early ’70s lives on in every part of the store. Outrageous window displays may greet customers with a life-sized purple gorilla, decked out in a captain’s hat and gold anchor-shaped chain, perched on a worn red-velvet couch. The massive vintage warehouses out back lure shoppers to brave the dense tangle of Western shirts, cowboy boots, luchador masks and Medusa wigs. Those who wish to express their quirks in the bedroom will find ample fetish gear, as well as bow-tie-dressed pasties. Beware, shrinking violets.
