Best public golf course

Rocky Ridge Golf Club

Winner: 2012.

It’s a rare Vermont golf course that can’t boast scenic mountain views. Rocky Ridge Golf Club summons players to hit from, and up to, a few summits of its own. Hugging Route 116 in St. George, the course plays longish, at just over 6000 yards, with a 72 par and above-average slope rating. But golfers of all abilities — even those who don’t know what a slope rating is — appreciate the course’s wide-open, forgiving fairways, reasonable rates and friendly clubhouse staff.

SEVEN DAYS: What was the worst golf shot you ever saw on your course? Whiffing doesn’t count.

ED COLEMAN, GENERAL MANAGER AND HEAD GOLF PRO: I saw a guy hit a golf ball between his legs that went off a tee marker and actually ricocheted and hit his partner. That’s the worst shot I’ve ever seen. I didn’t know it was physically possible.
