Move over, ’bladers and ’boarders — when it comes to aggro action on wheels, roller derby is the eyeliner-wearing, tough-talking new gal on the block. The nationally organized, exhibition-style sport arrived in Vermont this past winter with the formation of the Green Mountain Derby Dames, and the nascent skaters have been practicing hard. More than 20 of the team’s femme fatales pull on quad skates, pads and fishnets for a block-and-stop demo-derby showcase that’ll run pink, glittery circles around your average evening out. A Queen City rock triumvirate offers a live soundtrack: bewigged, Spandexed ’80s hair-band vibes from Bone Cobra, smart ’n’ hard power rock from Party Star, and hardcore punk from the band Y69. Ticket sales fund the launch of a 2009 bouting season, with home and away “games” against other derby teams from New England and beyond.
